In Memoriam: Fr. John P. Murphy, SJ

Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. John P. Murphy, SJ, who died on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. He was 79 years old, a Jesuit for 60 years, and a priest for 47 years.

John was born on March 10, 1938, in Chicago. He graduated from Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago in 1954 and entered the Society of Jesus on August 8, 1956, at Milford Novitiate in Milford, Ohio. He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1969, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North Aurora, Ill. John professed final vows at Loyola University Chicago on February 2, 1974.

In 1960, John earned a bachelor's degree in Latin and Greek from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He earned a master's degree in the same areas in 1962 and a doctorate in classical languages from Fordham University in 1963. He also earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the Gregorian University in 1966, a licentiate degree in sacred theology from Bellarmine School of Theology in North Aurora in 1970, and a master of divinity from Loyola University Chicago in 1970. 

During his regency, John taught Latin at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Ill. (1963–64). He spent more than 20 years at Loyola University Chicago as a professor of Latin and Greek (1970–93) and freshmen dean (1977–86). John spent four years in the Jesuit Curia in Rome as the regional secretary for the the USA and English-speaking Western Europe (1993–97). He then returned to Loyola University Chicago, where he taught (1997–2002) and was chair of the Classics Department (1999–2002). Following this, John became associate pastor of St. Xavier Church in Cincinnati, where he stayed until he moved to Colombiere Center in 2012 to care for his health.

John was a gifted researcher, professor, and scholar. He authored and edited many books including:
