Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. J. Cletus Healy, SJ, who died on April 7, 2014, at St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, Wis. He was 96 years old, a Jesuit for 75 years, and a priest for 62 years. May he rest in peace.
Father Healy was born in Newton, Iowa, on October 26, 1917, and attended grade school and high school there. He completed one year of college at Dowling Junior College in Des Moines, Iowa, and a second year of college at Creighton University in Omaha. He entered the Society at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Mo., on September 1, 1938. Father Healy had the usual Jesuit course of studies at St. Stanislaus Seminary, Saint Louis University, and St. Mary’s College. He was ordained a priest at St. Mary’s on June 14, 1951. After completing tertianship in Decatur, Ill., he professed final vows at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee on August 15, 1954.
Father Healy did regency at St. Francis Mission in St. Francis, S.D., and at Regis High School in Denver, but his ministry after ordination was concentrated in Milwaukee. He taught sociology and religion at Marquette High from 1953 to 1968. Then, he remained a member of the Marquette High Jesuit Community for another 24 years until 1992, when he helped inaugurate the St. Camillus Jesuit Community. During this latter period of his life, Fr. Healy was involved in editing and/or promoting various Catholic publications (Twin Circle, Vatican Voices, etc.) and managing a Milwaukee-area Catholic book and gift shop.
