The Jesuit Alumni and Friends of Chicago hosted a luncheon with featured speaker Mary Ann Ahern on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Union League Club of Chicago. Mary Ann is a Political Reporter for NBC 5 Chicago and an alum of John Carroll University.Ahern is best known for covering Cardinal Bernardin’s final years and the selection of Francis Cardinal George. She has traveled to Rome with the Cardinal in June 1997, for his first trip representing Chicago. Ahern returned to Rome in February of 1998 when George was elevated to the College of Cardinals.
Mary Ann covered the announcement of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit Pope. In addition, she covered Pope John Paul II on five of his Papal trips over the years, including: New York, Denver, South Carolina, St. Louis and Cuba. A native of Michigan City, Indiana, Ahern graduated with a B.A. degree from John Carroll University. While working as a teacher at two Chicago area High Schools, Ahern received her Masters degree in Education from Northeastern Illinois University, and another Masters degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. Mary Ann and her husband, Thomas, have three children.
