November 16, 2017 — The Jesuit Alumni and Friends of Detroit hosted Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, director of the Vatican Observatory, on Oct. 13 at the Detroit Athletic Club. Br. Consolmagno delivered remarks about “why we do science” and the intersection of science with faith. He also answered questions from the sold-out audience.

Br. Consolmagno was born in Detroit and attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School before earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in planetary science. He went on to obtain his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. Known as “the Pope’s Astronomer,” Br. Consolmagno was named by Pope Francis to be the director of the Vatican Observatory in 2015.
The Jesuit Friends and Alumni Network’s (JFAN) purpose is to gather those who share a commitment to the Jesuit mission and a desire for the spirituality of St. Ignatius to inspire their lives. The various JFAN clubs encourage those shaped by experiences with Jesuit institutions and ministries to answer the call to be men and women for and with others.
